Irene Ruiz

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Irene is a versatile dancer and choreographer trained in contemporary dance, ballet and Spanish Dance. Irene is currently immersed in the development of her choreographic language, submerging herself in various creative processes with numerous artists and collaborators.

After graduating from the Professional Dance Conservatory A. Ruiz Soler of Seville in the specialty of Spanish Dance and Flamenco she moved to Montreal, where she is currently pursuing a BFA in Contemporary Dance and Choreography, as well as in Jazz Music at Concordia University.

Her work, based on exploration, aims at the investigation of transdisciplinary languages through the use of contemporary dance vocabularies. Reflecting on poetic, rhythmic, and aesthetic dimensions plays a very active role in her creative practice.

Where I am from: Rive-Sud, Québec, Canada

My practice: I would say mostly Dance but I also take interest as well to incorporate my past of music and visual art in my arts. Most of the time, I incorporate those elements by doing my own music or to create some kind of prop for my pieces.

My interest in my performing arts: I explore in my creation, my past of being a gymnast and a competition dancer, in my creations of more “contemporary” dance. I don’t consider myself a contemporary choreographer because I don’t think my style of dance is conventional technical choreography. I consider myself a nouveau genre choreographer. In that case I only consider myself as a choreographer.

My interest in relation to Studio7: My interest in studio7 will be to learn more about the work of lighting and of the sound system. Like mentioned previously I do think those elements will help my music and visual arts interest.

My main role I enjoy in this platform: I do enjoy a lot of the curating that studio 7 needs and everything that currenthing a show is needing.

Florence Girard-Falardeau

I am a multidisciplinary artist from the south shore of Montreal. I made my first steps in the arts in visual arts from Primary to Secondary school where I earned at 12 the prize for artist of the year. I pursued visual arts for a few more years before replacing it with music. I started studying Baritone Saxophone in classical style, while also being part of the School Jazz band.

At the same time, I started taking recreational dance classes of Hip-Hop, Breakdance, Lyrical and Multi-Jazz. I then went to the Cegep Saint-Laurent in the Dance program where I trained in Classical Cecchetti Ballet, Liban and Graham Modern dance, Contemporary, Contact and improvisation and more. I also started heels during those years. After my graduation, I took a sabbatical year before entering the contemporary dance program at Concordia University, where the focus is on choreography. More recently, I also started training in Quebec Jig.

I consider my work chaotic, weird, colourful, experimental and multidisciplinary. Sometimes blurring the lines between performance and dance.
